Roman Catholic Marxism?
Excuse me?
Who is evangelizing whom?

Roman Catholic Marxism explores the Politics of Private property v. Collective property (i.e., Marxist Redistributionism) and how the Church treats that political dichotomy.

Vic Biorseth, OWM; Saturday, March 22, 2014
http://www.CatholicAmericanThinker.com/

I took so much heat from so many of you who did not want to be identified after publishing Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, and Evangelizing for World Communism that the subject matter demanded a whole lot more of my attention.  So be it.  You said I should carefully apply the "hermeneutic of continuity" and look into what had gone before on the topic.  I did that; and the deeper I got into it the more it seemed that the "hermeneutic of suspicion" might be more appropriately applied here.

This is getting scary.

To be clear, no new doctrine has been declared, and the Sacred Deposit remains untouched, and - in my inexpert judgment - all that Pope Francis, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Paul VI have done is offer moral recommendations or opinions regarding Global Redistribution of Private Property.

But Bishops, Priests and Laymen might read their words and carry them out through political action, to the detriment of the principle of private property and the rule of civil law.

  • Before you can redistribute anything, you must first take it.
  • Wealth = a penny saved = a penny earned = private property.

Remember, before America invented the rule of law, all that the world ever knew was the rule of men.  The civil ruler was the civil law personified.  The ruler made the law, and was not subject to it.  America changed all that.  The Magna Carta softened that rule, but did not eliminate it.  The ruler still made the law, and some people were still above the law, and still are, everywhere else.

We (America) are a nation of laws, not of men, and here all men, including all representative government officials, are subject to the exact same law, and stand equal to every other citizen before the exact same law.

The rest of the world has not adopted the American model of rule-of-law; quite the opposite.  Most of the rest of the civilized world is sliding deeper and deeper into variants of Marxist Socialism.

Throughout World History, world politics have always, even to this very day, involved either the threat or the application of direct brute military force.  Nothing has ever changed, regarding that simple historical Geo-political fact, and it will not change, until the world ends.  Those who believe that human society has somehow "evolved" into something higher, and that war is forever behind us, have been or are being fooled by someone.

Evil rules this world

Whatever limited peace the world has known, since the end of the last World War, is less due to any "social evolution" than to the very real threat of the application of American military force against any aggressor nation or alliance of nations.

Western European nations have been allowed to be "peacefully mesmerized" into Socialism without being militarily conquered by someone because of American military defense, not because of their own military defense.  Most other nations can no longer project any serious military power very much beyond their own borders, let alone take it to the enemy, which just happens to be the only possible way to win any war.  They have allowed themselves to become, militarily, dependent, even as, internally, they slowly become more Marxist, and softened up for eventual Marxist revolution.

It's happening here, too.

The collapse of the Soviet Union did not mark the collapse of the Marxist Ideology.  It was an economic collapse; it was not a political or ideological collapse.  The politics of Russia have not changed at all.  Russia remains Communist.  So does China.  Economic concessions to "Capitalism", i.e., somewhat freer markets and somewhat limited tolerance of private property, does not change the rigid Communist nature of the government.  If anything, it leans now more toward Fascistic or National Socialist than old time Communist.  It's still Marxist, and it still calls itself Communist.  The rulers are still typical Marxist dictators at the top, commanding the same old gigantic hierarchy of apparatchiks, administrators and petty bureaucrats controlling all the mundane details of citizen life.

All the Soviet economic collapse proved was that collectivization and redistribution of private property ultimately fails as a controlled economic "system" of man.  We all knew that, or we all should have known that.  Economics cannot be successfully engineered by man.  The free market - i.e., Capitalism - cannot even exist as a controlled system of man.  To whatever degree any part of it is controlled - prices, wages, interest rates, labor, management, private property, profit, etc. - to that same degree does it cease to be a free market - i.e., Capitalism.

The market is either free or not; it is either Capitalist or it is not.

So I read Evangelii Gaudium, and the related Rush Limbaugh brouhaha, and I wrote the Evangelizing for World Communism webpage.   Amid the flurry of arguments prompted by that page was a critique of Bishop Conley of Lincoln Nebraska's defense of Evangelii Gaudium published in National Review Online, and a quick flurry of new treatments of "unfettered" Capitalism, Trickle-Down and Social Justice, all from the lowly American citizen's point of view.

Then, while writing the Objective Reality of God page, through one of you, I became aware of the Dr. Alice Von Hildebrand interview published in Latin Mass Magazine, and I included it in that new webpage.  It raised serious questions, at least in my tiny little mind, about whether Pope Paul VI might somehow be involved or entangled in Marxism.  Read it yourself and see what you think.

Anyway, in the spirit of pursuing the "hermeneutic of continuity" I looked up and read the whole of Benedict XVI's Caritas in veritate in more detail, since I had previously written Opposing the Pope on Globalism fairly strongly criticizing it.  Maybe I had misread it or misinterpreted it.  Let me quote what bothers me about it here.

 ...

36. Economic activity cannot solve all social problems through the simple application of commercial logic. This needs to be directed towards the pursuit of the common good, for which the political community in particular must also take responsibility. Therefore, it must be borne in mind that grave imbalances are produced when economic action, conceived merely as an engine for wealth creation, is detached from political action, conceived as a means for pursuing justice through redistribution.” ...

“In the global era, the economy is influenced by competitive models tied to cultures that differ greatly among themselves. The different forms of economic enterprise to which they give rise find their main point of encounter in commutative justice. Economic life undoubtedly requires contracts, in order to regulate relations of exchange between goods of equivalent value. But it also needs just laws and forms of redistribution governed by politics, and what is more, it needs works redolent of the spirit of gift. The economy in the global era seems to privilege the former logic, that of contractual exchange, but directly or indirectly it also demonstrates its need for the other two: political logic, and the logic of the unconditional gift.” ...

“39. Paul VI in Populorum Progressio called for the creation of a model of market economy capable of including within its range all peoples and not just the better off. He called for efforts to build a more human world for all, a world in which “all will be able to give and receive, without one group making progress at the expense of the other”. In this way he was applying on a global scale the insights and aspirations contained in Rerum Novarum, written when, as a result of the Industrial Revolution, the idea was first proposed — somewhat ahead of its time — that the civil order, for its self-regulation, also needed intervention from the State for purposes of redistribution. Not only is this vision threatened today by the way in which markets and societies are opening up, but it is evidently insufficient to satisfy the demands of a fully humane economy. What the Church's social doctrine has always sustained, on the basis of its vision of man and society, is corroborated today by the dynamics of globalization.” ...

"Despite some of its structural elements, which should neither be denied nor exaggerated, “globalization, a priori, is neither good nor bad. It will be what people make of it”. We should not be its victims, but rather its protagonists, acting in the light of reason, guided by charity and truth. Blind opposition would be a mistaken and prejudiced attitude, incapable of recognizing the positive aspects of the process, with the consequent risk of missing the chance to take advantage of its many opportunities for development. The processes of globalization, suitably understood and directed, open up the unprecedented possibility of large-scale redistribution of wealth on a world-wide scale; if badly directed, however, they can lead to an increase in poverty and inequality, and could even trigger a global crisis. It is necessary to correct the malfunctions, some of them serious, that cause new divisions between peoples and within peoples, and also to ensure that the redistribution of wealth does not come about through the redistribution or increase of poverty: a real danger if the present situation were to be badly managed. For a long time it was thought that poor peoples should remain at a fixed stage of development, and should be content to receive assistance from the philanthropy of developed peoples. Paul VI strongly opposed this mentality in Populorum Progressio. Today the material resources available for rescuing these peoples from poverty are potentially greater than before, but they have ended up largely in the hands of people from developed countries, who have benefited more from the liberalization that has occurred in the mobility of capital and labour. The world-wide diffusion of forms of prosperity should not therefore be held up by projects that are self-centred, protectionist or at the service of private interests. Indeed the involvement of emerging or developing countries allows us to manage the crisis better today. The transition inherent in the process of globalization presents great difficulties and dangers that can only be overcome if we are able to appropriate the underlying anthropological and ethical spirit that drives globalization towards the humanizing goal of solidarity. Unfortunately this spirit is often overwhelmed or suppressed by ethical and cultural considerations of an individualistic and utilitarian nature. Globalization is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon which must be grasped in the diversity and unity of all its different dimensions, including the theological dimension. In this way it will be possible to experience and to steer the globalization of humanity in relational terms, in terms of communion and the sharing of goods.” ...

“On this front too, there is a pressing moral need for renewed solidarity, especially in relationships between developing countries and those that are highly industrialized. The technologically advanced societies can and must lower their domestic energy consumption, either through an evolution in manufacturing methods or through greater ecological sensitivity among their citizens. It should be added that at present it is possible to achieve improved energy efficiency while at the same time encouraging research into alternative forms of energy. What is also needed, though, is a worldwide redistribution of energy resources, so that countries lacking those resources can have access to them. The fate of those countries cannot be left in the hands of whoever is first to claim the spoils, or whoever is able to prevail over the rest. Here we are dealing with major issues; if they are to be faced adequately, then everyone must responsibly recognize the impact they will have on future generations, particularly on the many young people in the poorer nations, who “ask to assume their active part in the construction of a better world”.

I really don't know what else to say.  I was right the first time.  None of this is even practical.  Presence or absence of "natural resources" or even "industrial development" in any given nation have little or nothing to do with it; it is the nature of the standing government of the people that has everything to do with it.  If the citizenry enjoy

  1. freedom, within reason, and
  2. national security, and
  3. moral laws that are representative and enforced, and
  4. protection from their own government

they will prosper on their own.  One case that proves the point is explained at the beginning of the Population Problem page.  It involved Hong Kong, with a higher population density than Bangladesh, and with less natural resources than Bangladesh, and yet it rather quickly made of itself the economic tiger of the Pacific Rim, while Bangladesh languished and suffered.

It's the government, and the governance.  Nothing else.  What seems to be not recognized here is the principle of Human Capital.  If the government will get out of the way and allow the citizen to do what he is naturally inclined to do, he will prosper.  Get out of the licensing, regulating, heavy taxing, restricting, etc., and let the fisherman fish, and let the farmer farm, and let the rancher ranch, and let the merchant sell, and people will feed themselves, their families, and sell the excess, creating profit = a penny saved = wealth = private property.

Natural resources are nearly everywhere, but most people are not allowed by their own governments to find it, prospect for it, drill for it, mine it, produce it, refine it, etc., and so they don't .  Is that their fault, or their government's fault?  Under Marxism, the government does everything, the people are totally dependent upon the government, and so they are transformed into mere mouths to feed rather than human capital, who will produce something on their own.

Perhaps some of our Popes have bought into some of the Beautiful Lies of Marxism, chief among them the Marxist incitement to Class Warfare disguised as Social Justice.  That's the really big one.  But here's the thing:

Everything in Marxism is a lie.  Everything

Especially the Equality Stupidity.  Marx's real goal, which is the attainment of absolute dictatorial power, is laid out in Refuting Marx.  Everything in his Manifesto is nothing but a recruitment drive to assemble Useful Idiots and Agent Provocateurs to bring about an eventual violent ascendency to dictatorship.  It is a diabolically clever Machiavellian plan refined by the Hegelian Dialectic, and it has been effectively seducing and recruiting fellow travelers since publication in 1848.  The overwhelming majority of these fellow travelers are soft hearted moral men who seek to uplift the downtrodden, and who don't have the first clue or the foggiest notion about what they are getting themselves, and their nation, and the world, into.

The American Founding Fathers and the Framers of the American Constitution saw this potential long before the Communist Manifesto was written.  I will quote some of them here, from the Beautiful Lies page:

"Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government." -James Madison

"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

"To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it." -Thomas Jefferson

"Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated." -Thomas Jefferson

"The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If ‘Thou shalt not covet’ and ‘Thou shalt not steal’ were not commandments of Heaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society before it can be civilized or made free." -John Adams

"With respect to the two words ‘general welfare,’ I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators." -James Madison

"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." -James Madison

"If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions." -James Madison

"There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." -James Madison

Now, none of that is to say that America as a nation, and Americans as citizens, have not been charitable.  It is probably fair to say that we have been more charitable than any other people on earth.  But that's the point:  our charity comes from our Judeo-Christian morality, and that morality is the first target of attack by the influence of all the Marxists among us, and now ruling us.

Comrade Putin now touts himself, or has himself touted as a Christian, of all things.  He makes speeches and passes laws condemning such things as sodomy and abortion, even as our own President and Secretary of State promote, champion and sponsor those abominations, both at home and abroad, except in Islamic lands.  And so Putin - the Atheistic-Communist dictator of Russia - is seen by the world to be the new world moral leader, opposing the obvious decadence of the West, represented by our own sitting government, which is now probably just as much Marxist as he is.  And just as immoral.

Putin has his press propaganda-wing, just as Obama does.  But Putin also has the support of his Russian Orthodox Church, which has been a Communist instrument since the early days of the Soviet Union.  It is easy for him to play holier-than-thou to Obama, as they both strut their stuff before the moron voters of the world.

Islam presents another threat, as yet another ideology of world conquest.  It is similar to Marxism in that it has global ambitions.  It is more than a religion; in fact, in my opinion, the religion part of it is a sham.  Islam is a political ideology and a constantly evolving military strategy for global conquest.  Again, as in World War II, Islam is aligning with Atheistic Marxism in an uneasy temporary alliance, under the ancient maxim "The enemy of my enemy is my friend".  They will settle with each other later, after the West is conquered.

The Koran leaves no way around world conquest.  The "disciple" is instructed to convert the infidel, subjugate the infidel, or kill the infidel, and to make war until the whole world is forced into the House of Islam.

Satan's most successful demons in the destruction of the souls of men have been Mohammed and Marx.

Seeing Communist Redistribution-ism in the writings of multiple Popes is shocking.  More than anything else, it makes me angry; I can't help it.  These are towering intellects; they are easily among the most brilliant of all of their contemporaries.  Just read their writings; they are quite obviously brilliant.  Being fooled - being sucked in - is precisely what is not supposed to happen to a brilliant intellectual.

Is there any hope for mankind, if our best and brightest are so easily recruited into the fellowship of all Marxist "fellow travelers"?

When Christ comes again, what will He find?

This looks like Obama and Putin are competitors but before you said they were
"in cahoots" and practically partners in crime.  Which is it?

Chris:

I did surmise that, and I still do, following the pattern of how Hitler and Stalin were early on "in cahoots" and secretly partners in crime.  The common goal of Obama, Putin, all of Marxism and all of Islam is to bring the West down.  Obama and Putin were made for each other; it's a match made in hell.  It would not surprise me in the least to find out, years from now, that today they are merely play-acting on the world stage for each other's benefit.  Assuming they are successful, eventually, one of them will eat the other.

Hi Vic.

Regarding the words of Benedict XVI in his Caritas in Veritate (Selfless love in Truth) I can understand your concern.

As I see it, the TROUBLE starts from Benedict's opening statement at item 36: "Economic activity cannot solve all social problems through the simple application of commercial logic." I ask "Who said it was supposed to?" and the answer is "No one".  (Well maybe Karl Marx, but he had a very different agenda.) This of course is a Straw Man fallacy. It begins with an innocuous sounding statement pointed slightly away from the straight path to truth, and the argument only continues to diverge more and more from truth unless one stops, backtracks, and begins again in the right direction.

But the PROBLEM as I see it is this: Benedict is pontificating on specific things that are wrong with the world when he should be evangelizing on specific things that are right within the New Covenant. A pope's job is not to weave words, but to speak truth. Any pope who rambles on and on about the sins of the world begins to sound more like a mendicant instead of a confident leader of the Church. Jesus never rambled, He got straight to the point and never wavered. The pope might do well to stick constantly applying the words of Christ and the words of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Lord knows we all need to be continually reminded.

Since Benedict was speaking in the context selfless love, or caritas, I think he means that selfless love ought to be the motive for all human activity. This of course is an ideal and not of this world. If selfless love was man’s default motivation, man would have no need of redemption.  Benedict uses most often "politics", not "government" although he does use the word "State". Based on the context I think Benedict refers to politics as "a set of beliefs or principles of a group" rather than as a “specific action by a particular government”.  "State" then, would be the culmination of power that stems from the practice of selfless love.

Somehow, I feel suddenly the need to sing "Kumbaya”.

I hear you, and I agree.  Perfection is not of this world, but the next.  That old, old, old axiom still applies.  The "draw" of the Maxist lie is that it promises to make the world perfect.

We are supposed to concentrate on pointing the way to heaven rather than trying to perfect the earth.  However, while here, we also have to deal with real, actual, physical as well as spiritual enemies.  History shows that many of them will kill the body and the soul, if we let them.

But only if we let them.

Hang in there buddy.

While Popes enjoy the charism of Infallibility when teaching on faith and morals, as established in the unchanging Deposit of Faith, they remain human, and imperfect, as was Peter and the original Apostles.  Popes can err when not teaching on faith and morals, and whenever speaking on matters outside the Deposit of Faith.  Two of these areas, particularly troubling in these days, involve Papal favor shown to areas of Godless Marxist ideology, and to the belligerent, invasive, domineering and menacing false religion of Islam.
