American citizens are supposed to be self-ruled.

That is the whole original and founding concept of America. We are supposed to be a moral self-governing people with a small government of limited power, all solemnly sworn to keep us a moral self-governing people, living within the constraints of reasonable and representative moral law.

So why is our current government so huge? Why does it govern so much, when, as it was Constituted, it should govern so very little?
