Religion and Journalism in American Politics

Why is Atheism, and not Catholicism, off limits in American Political Debates? And where did Journalism get any right to "monitor" American Political Debates?

We are a Constitutional Republic, and not a Democratic Republic, and that is an important point. We are not ruled by "Our Democracy"; we are ruled by our Constitution. All of us, equally. All of the people, and all of the government officials, from the President on down. The Constitution, as the supreme law of the land, is our only secular ruler.
