On the Brennen Security Clearance Brouhaha

What on earth does Freedom Of Speech have to do with access to sensitive government information?

Sorry, but I just don't get it. I had a security clearance in the Army, but when I left the service I left the clearance too. What's the big deal? When I went to work for a defense contractor company I had to get it back again, but it was an easy process, having had one before and never having lost it for cause. They didn't have as much of my life to examine the second time round.
