There are all kinds of liars: criminal liars covering up crimes or criminal intentions, pathological liars, outdoors-men sitting around a campfire, and, of course, whole fields of politics, political science and particular agenda-driven and agenda-proving "science".

Now, hunting and fishing wild tales are intended to be funny, and their main purpose for being is to be so incredulous as to make people laugh, or, sometimes even more funny, to make children or uninitiated adults stare in open-jawed shock.
