Why do all American politicians think that the only way to "fix" social security is to cut benefits, increase the FICA tax or both? Were they all born yesterday?

Why are all American politicians terrified by the mere mention of ending social security and Medicare, holding it to be the fatal "third rail" of American politics? Did they just fall off of the turnip truck?
