We are a Constitutional Republic, of a form that is unique in all the world and in all of world history. We were designed very specifically to not be a democracy. If and when democracy rules, democracy can overrule the constitution, and we are supposed to be ruled by our constitution, not by any democracy. Even the government is supposed to be ruled by the constitution. We can only elect our government; we cannot "elect" our constitution or any constitutional (federal) law.
