This beautiful Church was dedicated 100 years ago. This morning we were blessed to have Fr. William Lawrence, North American Provincial of the FSSP join us to be the celebrant for the high solemn Mass of the anniversary of the dedication of a Church.
It was a a traditional high mass sufficient to bring tears to your eyes. A perfect liturgical example of how God should be treated in His house.
The readings for an Anniversary Mass of the Dedication of a Church:
Lesson: Apocalypse 21:2-5
And I John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people; and God himself with them shall be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away. And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold, I make all things new.
Gospel: Luke 19:1-10
And entering in, he walked through Jericho. And behold, there was a man named Zacheus, who was the chief of the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was, and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature. And running before, he climbed up into a sycamore tree, that he might see him; for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up, he saw him, and said to him: Zacheus, make haste and come down; for this day I must abide in thy house.
And he made haste and came down; and received him with joy. And when all saw it, they murmured, saying, that he was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner. But Zacheus standing, said to the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wronged any man of any thing, I restore him fourfold. Jesus said to him: This day is salvation come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Emmanuel is a Hebrew name meaning "God is with us". And in Catholic Churches, He is indeed with us. Who else can say it? In the Lesson, the voice said, "Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people; and God himself with them shall be their God".
In that small Tabernacle on the Altar, He is present; body, blood, soul and divinity, as taught and held in the doctrine of Eucharist. The miracle of transformation occurs on that altar every time a priest prays the words of the Consecration.
He is there. Every time you enter the Church, He is aware of your presence. Men remove their hats, ladies cover their heads, all pay attention to and show reverence to the Tabernacle, because, He is there.
And He is infinitely more aware of your presence than you are of His.
And Sunday, January 11, is the Feast of the Holy Family.
The readings for the Feast of the Holy Family:
Lesson: Colossians 3:12-17
Put ye on therefore, as the elect of God, holy, and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience: Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if any have a complaint against another: even as the Lord hath forgiven you, so do you also. But above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection: And let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly, in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Gospel: Luke 2:42-52
And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not. And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance. And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him.
And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father's business? And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them.
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men.
God Himself gives us the model of the family, and sets the example of proper mercy, patience, humility and forgiveness. The Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, is indeed the model for all truly Christian families.
Note the words of the Gospel reading, "Et erit subditus illis", "and He was subject to them". God - their Creator - was subject to his creatures.
Having emptied Himself of Godliness He became Man to live, suffer and die as a mere man, to show us The Way as a shining example of the proper authority of the family.
He gives us the priorities of life: God, Family and Country, in that order.
- No country can ever be great without the natural family.
- No family can ever be great without God.
- God is already Great. He waits for us to know Him, i.e., Truth.
