We can't say enough about the VA.
Some years ago now I had cataract surgery at the Dayton VA hospital. It was done with only the local anesthetic eye-drops and nothing else, because I worry more about general anesthetics and drugs than I do about surgery. There was no pain; discomfort, yes, but no pain. I really wanted to blink, but there were some kind of clamps holding my eyelids open, which was a good thing. All I had to do was lie still and the doctor did the rest. I had to go through it twice, because they wouldn't do both eyes at the same time.
The results were stunning. All my life I had been near sighted, 20/20 corrected with glasses or contacts. Now, I am far sighted, 20/15, better than 20/20. I love it. I don't have to use readers except for really small print, and, I need them to work at the computer. I don't even carry them around any more, except on Sundays and Holy Days, because I need them to read my missal at Mass. Other than Church days, the readers are left sitting on the desk next to the computer.
And my readers are, guess what, VA supplied prescription no-line bifocals.
So, it was time to get something done about my hearing, and once again, it was the VA to the rescue. It turned out that there are certain tones, or frequencies of sounds, that I cannot hear. Some deep or low-pitched tones are a problem, but some of the high-pitched tones are blocked out completely from my hearing.
The important thing I learned is that all the "miracle" hearing devices advertised out there that you can order on-line are just volume-boosters of all sounds. And what hearing-impaired people really need are prescription hearing aids that will amplify the unique tones and pitches they have a problem hearing, and that smooths out your hearing and makes it clear as a bell.
After all the testing to find out my specific hearing needs, they shot some kind of stuff in each ear and let it solidify for a few minutes to make molds of my ears. It then took a number of weeks to have the hearing aids made, and I came in and learned how to use them.
It's a wonderful thing. They are wirelessly connected to each other through Blue-Tooth. I stick them in my ears, and there is a little external button on each one.
There is one Priest at our Church who stands too far away from the microphone and is particularly soft spoken. When he is the homilist, I cannot hear a single word he is saying, and my wife only hears a word here and there, but not everything, and there's nothing wrong with her hearing. No one else can hear everything he says either; so it's him, not us.
Now, with my new hearing aids, when I crank these suckers up all the way I hear every word this priest says!
But that comes with some problems. I also hear people around me turning the pages of their missals. Every sound is radically amplified, to the point of being loud annoying racket.
It turns out I have to adjust the sound up and down for different environments, with different kinds of background racket. Another problem is the sounds I make. You know how when you are chewing something particularly crunchy you can't hear what someone is saying? Multiply that problem by ten with hearing aids. Maybe twenty. In fact, when I'm chewing something mushy I can't hear what someone is saying.
I was surprised to learn that the inside area of a big, open edifice, like our Church, all by itself, makes a sound. There is a background sort of roar in a really big room. Step outside and it's gone; go back in and there it is.
There is a capability, with a downloaded app on your phone, to hear the phone through your hearing aids rather than through your phone. I don't mess with it because I hear fine enough with the aids as they are. As a courier driver I keep the phone in a charging holder within view and reach, and always use it in speaker-phone mode to communicate with dispatch or with customers all day, and that works out fine for me through the work day. The rest of the time I just use it normally.
Bottom line, the VA has been very good to me and to a lot of vets. I know there are a lot of horror stories out there about treatment at the VA, but I have never witnessed any of it; all I can say about the VA is good. Maybe that's Trump's doing, I don't know; I love my own personal doctor and his staff, I love the surgeon and staff who did my eye surgery, I love the audio techs who did my hearing aids, I love the pharmacy who keeps my prescriptions filled, and I just love the Dayton VA.
I don't know about all of them out there, but the Dayton VA is great.

Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and
Broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in
thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life:
and few there are that find it! Beware of false prophets, who come to you in
the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

"We belong to the Church militant; and She is militant because on earth the powers of darkness are ever restless to encompass Her destruction. Not only in the far-off centuries of the early Church, but down through the ages and in this our day, the enemies of God and Christian civilization make bold to attack the Creator's supreme dominion and sacrosanct human rights." --Pope Pius XII
