There have been a number of scripture verses that have personal "epiphanies" or awakenings for me, and Romans 10:17 was a big one, and in fact all of Romans, but especially Chapter 10 have been important eye openers at one time or another. Today, snowed-in and missing Mass, I thought I would write about Romans 10.
The end of the law is faith in Christ. which the Jews refusing to submit to, cannot be justified.
1 Brethren, the will of my heart, indeed, and my prayer to God, is for them unto salvation. 2 For I bear them witness, that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they, not knowing the justice of God, and seeking to establish their own, have not submitted themselves to the justice of God. 4 For the end of the law is Christ, unto justice to every one that believeth. 5 For Moses wrote, that the justice which is of the law, the man that shall do it, shall live by it.
[3] "The justice of God": That is, the justice which God giveth us through Christ; as on the other hand, the Jews' own justice is, that which they pretended to by their own strength, or by the observance of the law, without faith in Christ.
6 But the justice which is of faith, speaketh thus: Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? that is, to bring Christ down; 7 Or who shall descend into the deep? that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead. 8 But what saith the scripture? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart. This is the word of faith, which we preach. 9 For if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For, with the heart, we believe unto justice; but, with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
- [9] "Thou shalt be saved": To confess the Lord Jesus, and to call upon the name of the Lord (ver. 13) is not barely the professing a belief in the person of Christ; but moreover, implies a belief of his whole doctrine, and an obedience to his law; without which, the calling him Lord will save no man. St. Matt. 7. 21.
11 For the scripture saith: Whosoever believeth in him, shall not be confounded. 12 For there is no distinction of the Jew and the Greek: for the same is Lord over all, rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear, without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they be sent, as it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, of them that bring glad tidings of good things!
- [15] "Unless they be sent": Here is an evident proof against all new teachers, who have all usurped to themselves the ministry without any lawful mission, derived by succession from the apostles, to whom Christ said, John 20. 21, As my Father hath sent me, I also send you.
16 But all do not obey the gospel. For Isaias saith: Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 Faith then cometh by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ. 18 But I say: Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound hath gone forth into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the whole world. 19 But I say: Hath not Israel known? First, Moses saith: I will provoke you to jealousy by that which is not a nation; by a foolish nation I will anger you. 20 But Isaias is bold, and saith: I was found by them that did not seek me: I appeared openly to them that asked not after me.
21 But to Israel he saith: All the day long have I spread my hands to a people that believeth not, and contradicteth me.

The greatest epiphany I got from this quite a few years ago was from verse 17, that "faith then cometh from hearing".
Hearing.
Not reading.
Hearing.
At the time, I was learning to practice Lectio Divina, and after that verse struck me, I began to always try mentally putting myself in the time and place of the event any scripture was talking about. To become part of the scene; If the Lord was speaking, or one of the evangelists, or any of the authors, to actually, in my mind, be the one being spoken to, or part of the crowd being addressed by the speaker.
It put a whole new light on many readings.
Remember, for a whole lot of years, other than Paul's letters and some of the other letters, the Word was spoken, not written. It was many years after the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension before the Apostles woke up and began gathering all the letters together and actually writing the Gospels and the Acts that would wind up comprising the New Testament.
The Word had been, and still was, being spoken, throughout the world.
To this day, in every morning before any Mass, I read the day's readings, often several times, so that I am ready to "hear" them. Of course, the readings at Mass are sung or spoken in Latin, and I do not speak Latin. But then when the celebrant mounts the ambo for the Homily he does the Readings aloud again in English. And I close the Missile and listen intently, with my soul, as if I were the one being addressed, especially during the Gospel with the Lord speaking.
But there are other things that Romans address that are as appropriate to what's going on today as they were when they were written, and when they were spoken. For instance, who is your brother and who is your neighbor.
Because the Jews who do not accept Christ are not justified does not mean that they are not our neighbors. Why? They still observe and obey, perhaps as imperfectly as we do, the Ten Commandments. They are, after all, civilized, a menace to no one, and the first chosen of God. That Jesus Christ, God incarnate, was born a Jew, of a Jewish mother and a Jewish stepfather, and that all of His chosen Apostles were Jews.
And we have it on good authority (Revelation 7) that at least 144,000 of them will be in heaven, along with an unknown number who accepted Christ as the Messiah and joined the Church.
Can we not say the same thing about our separated brothers among the Orthodox and the Protestants? Not being justified religiously does not mean they cannot be our brothers and our neighbors in this life, for they too, hopefully, observe and obey the Commandments and are civilized.
We, and they, live this life in this world, with all its blessings and curses.
And in this life we need to ally with those who are most civilized and moral against those who are not only uncivilized and immoral, but who are actually anti-human-civilization as well as anti-God.
