Yesterday was the tenth Sunday after Pentecost, and the readings hit me in a different way this time, regarding especially tongues, and their historic relationship with the pantheon of minor gods that once upon a time were commonly held to be significant to certain vocations, careers or professions. There were gods for this, that and the other thing; gods for virtually everything.
And then, suddenly, there was the one and only real God Who made Himself known to man, and everything changed.
But there are vestiges of the old thinking still remaining in a milder form. How many times have you heard a sportscaster say something like "the gods of baseball were smiling on" some player or some team? Or a fisherman speak of "the gods of fishing" after a nice catch? Some of us may have a special fishing hat that we couldn't go fishing without; silly, but it's there, nonetheless.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of workings, but the same God, Who works all things in all. Now the manifestation of the Spirit is given to everyone for profit. At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves as being just and despised others. Two men went up to the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and began to pray thus within himself: ‘O God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of men, robbers, dishonest, adulterers, or even like this publican. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I possess.’ But the publican, standing afar off, would not so much as lift up his eyes to heaven, but kept striking his breast, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me the sinner!’ I tell you, this man went back to his home justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.

The idol for this or that "gift" in 1 Corinthians never hit me before in that particular way. A carpenter might have had an idol of a carpentry god in his shop as a good luck charm or an actual spirit to whom he might make some prayer or some offering hoping to add luck, or the help of a pleased spirit, to make him a better carpenter.
And a healer likewise, and a teacher, and, also, a linguist.
One who spoke more than one language.
And, an interpreter of languages.
One who was well enough educated in more than one language to be able to properly interpret what someone said in one language, to another who only understood another language, and vice-versa.
We have written about our own unhappy experience with the supposedly Catholic Life In The Spirit movement seminars elsewhere in these pages. Call me a Doubting Thomas if you want, but,
- Modern day speaking in tongues has the image of either fakery or hyper-emotionalism, whether self induced or induced by a "facilitator".
- Being "slain in the spirit" similarly seems fake, over emotional or self-centered, smelling of self-adulation and personal attention seeking.
Why?
- Nowhere in scripture did anyone who spoke in tongues "ask for", pray for, or somehow seek the charism of speaking in tongues ahead of time.
- Nowhere in scripture did anyone ever speak in tongues in an event in which the language they spoke was not understood by the listeners.
Natural instinct tells me that calmness is necessary to approach God, or to ask Him to approach you. There is no higher sense of inner calm we have ever experience to equal that inner sense of Holy Communion we feel at the Communion Rail. How could any "personal relationship" be equal to or greater than that?
We now see all of this tongue speaking and being slain in the spirit as experiences of mass hyper-emotionalism affecting people who desperately want the experience to happen. They were psychologically pre-set to experience it, and thus, they did.
But was it real, or self-induced?
I don't believe it's real. What do you think?

"Speaking in tongues" today is absolute sign of demon worship and demonic activity - made all the more pernicious and blasphemous, for many claim to do it right in a House of God. This modern phenomenon is cognate to divination, such as that of Greek Pythias at Delphi - where certain fumes were breathed in by the oracles to achieve demonic possession. From there, the demons were known to speak in obsolete or unknown tongues and the Pythia had to somehow "interpret" it all. The babbling of these Pentecostals reminds me of that. And I am not the only one in my thinking.
Moreover, God bestows gifts based on their need - not for mankind, but for God and His religion. Take, for example, the preaching of the Apostles (to an audience potentially consisting of everything from Spain to Middle East) or that of St. Francis (who preached in India, a land far removed from any known Western culture). Also, the particular properties of the ability merely make a preacher's language understandable to the spectators in their own languages - a preacher does not babble or speak some unknown language. With all this, we see that the Holy Spirit works for the spread of the good religion only - and His gift is so far removed from the demonic babbling or divination that it's clearly the opposite of demonic practices. Anyone who claims to speak in tongues? They should be referred to an exorcist.
