I'm a talk radio freak. Since, as a local courier, my office is my car, I listen to it all the time. I usually start out with Glenn Beck, but whenever that show descends into "Moron Trivia" or other such nonsense, I switch to Herman Cain for more substantive conservative discussion. Then, I listen to Rush, faithfully. Then, it's time for Sean Hannity, and again, whenever Sean descends into either Cafeteria Catholicism, trivial discussion or another long litany of self-praise I switch to Catholic Radio. And after Sean, I always switch on Catholic Radio. Lately, that means listening to Fr. Larry Richards, for one of his The Reason For Our Hope lecture series.
And Fr. Larry's lectures are always good; but the recurring theme that keeps coming back that I have trouble with is his utter condemnation of simple adult judgment. Every time the subject comes up, I think, this time, he will qualify it somehow; but he never does. He says that the one thing Jesus commanded us to not do, ever, is judge anyone for anything.
But we have before us John 7:24:
And that sounds to me like Jesus expects us to exercise judgment.
And we have this, in Matthew 18:
And that sounds to me like the Church is expected to use judgment. And, in 2 Thes 3 we see another call to judge each other:
So you see my quandary.
In responsive talk-show mode, when Fr. Larry has actually been on the air, he advises callers to go ahead and attend that homosexual wedding reception, although not the ceremony, and do not judge your homosexual relative or friend. Which is to say, go ahead and witness passionate homosexual kisses, and maybe join in clinking silverware against tableware to get them to do it again, in front of all the children present.
Who are we to judge? Why, it might drive them away from us, and further away from the Church.
The claim that Jesus sought out the sinners and ate with tax collectors is true enough, but not to join them in their sin, or to remain, approvingly, in their company while they continued to sin. He went to them to redeem them, call them to repentance and to convert them from their sin.
Remember, Zacchaeus repented of his sins and made restitution to those he sinned against. The Prodigal Son repented of his wrongdoing. Mary Magdellen was converted from her sinful ways. He instructed the woman caught in adultery to go and sin no more.
I find no passage where Jesus approved of sin or looked the other way while continuing in the presence of people who were actively sinning. Where, exactly, did He ever do such a thing?
Is this "absolutely non-judgmental thinking" the path our Church is on?
I may be wrong - and I admit that I am guessing - but it looks like Fr. Larry and a whole lot more Catholic clerics, including many Bishops, and perhaps even Pope Francis, may have been fallen victim to the Crudification of Catholicism. Inspired by a subset of Marxism, which now dominates education, known as Cultural Marxism. It came to dominate education through the insidious work of The Frankfurt School. Here's how a German professor described it in a comment after the Refuting Free Love page:
That's the best "Nutshell" description I've ever seen.
Cultural Marxism, and Gramsci Marxism, now predominates in formal education, from kindergarten on up. All public schools and the biggest and most famous universities are steeped in it. It is a not-so subterranean thread of education that is now taught as more important than the classical education subjects. All the millions of now mal-educated and infected teachers are convinced that they are improving the world by advancing it, in accordance with Marx's dictum,
The ends justify the means. Bottom line, Catholic Culture, like American Culture, like Western Culture, has been mal-educated by teachers who have been mal-educated by mal-educated teachers, etc., to the point of actually believing that such stupid teachings as homosexuality and trans-genderism are "Natural" and "Normal". In the absolute absence of any real scientific evidence whatsoever. They believe that homos and trannies just can't help themselves, that they just absolutely have to commit perverted forms of sexual immorality, they have no choice in the matter, and so the rest of us are now called to "Understand" and not be judgmental about it.
What can I say. I ain't buying it.
They are promoting homosexuality and trans-genderism where it didn't previously exist. Little children are being taught to think about their sexual orientation, and they are helped into a life of twisted, demented perversion by teachers, by parents, by "doctors" and - God help us - by Roman Catholic Clerics, who ask us to not be judgmental about such absolute garbage.
Bishops like Dolan who celebrate it, and like Wuerl, who welcomes everyone on earth to Eucharist, and Fr. Larry, who recommends attending that homo reception to not alienate forever that close relative or friend.
So, why does the Church Militant exist, again? Someone remind me.

Your clarity and use of God-given intellect and reason always are a blessing to me. Well done!
Regarding Fr. Larry Richards, have you tried to contact him with your concerns (is he reachable through some media)? I would love to read a discussion between the two of you regarding your concerns.
The Freudian repression was fused with Marxism and I think presented at a time when Hollywood bloomed. There was much confusion for parents who had been seeing Hollywood dolls dressed scantily, in chorus lines, or tough women trying to get the headline and the man...really aerating the souls, getting them ready for "the experts" to begin to fill their lives with nonsense. Some, but far too few, could see through it. Their children would then be drawn into the nonsense through every conceivable avenue of their lives...including the evil that had entered the Church and had made gains. Thank goodness for those who took the grace before them, remaining strong in order to be proclaiming Truth to those who had/have never been exposed or alerted to it.
God bless you, your lovely wife, and your family this 2016 and always and thanks, again and again, for remaining strong and proclaiming Truth!

Thank you; you are too kind.
No, I haven't personally contacted Fr. Larry, but I have heard others call in and argue against social and family acceptance and embracing of active homosexual members, and Fr. Larry is quite adamant about it. Never disown; never condemn; never alienate or be alienated from them. That is his rock solid position. Accept them as they are.
I'm sorry, but I cannot agree with that position. Maybe I'm suffering from early onset old-timers disease or something, but I still have this lingering sense of social propriety that cannot bless and approve or even tolerate the close company of scandalous public sinners.
I see this as another part of a pernicious evil infection of our whole culture. The horrible thing about it is that so many (probably) good and holy men like Fr. Larry don't even see it.

You are dead wrong about the Beatles; they were not smart enough to figure it out, or, they were too stoned. They were being manipulated, and they didn't even know it.

What we are witnessing has been in the works for years. Its a re-interpretation of the Gospel that says we accept sin. We saw this immediately in the aftermath of the 2015 Scotus decision over gay marriage. Faithful Christians got lambasted for resisting the acceptance of sin. Sin is no longer sin. We the faithful didn't understand the Gospel ... who knew?
Now, mercy that is God's gift for a repentant soul is now freely given by the Church when it really has no authority to do so, because there has been no repentance.
Why not the Jubilee Year of Repentance? This generation is so sinful and corrupt that it needs reminded of its sin and the need to repent before it is too late. We need John the Baptist ... badly!

I have been watching listening and feeling confused as to why some popular clergy are giving mixed messages! I love my church but these turbulent times might call for me to follow sticker orthodoxy!

Duane and Mary:
Many years ago, in the LPMP program of the Athenaeum of Ohio, I wondered about how (and why) my teachers called me "rigid" on doctrine, and "triumphalist", using those as pejorative terms, while I was quite proud of being rigid on doctrine and triumphalist about Catholicism. And as more and more time goes by, it just makes more and more sense.
Never despair! We know that Christ wins in the end, and we know that the very gates of hell will not prevail against His Church. Inside treachery and treason may well bring America down. But even inside treachery will never bring down the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Truth will prevail.

I always judge actions and words I would never judge a persons soul as I am not GOD. I was brought up with the following "Show me your friends and I will tell what you are like".

Never be lukewarm.
Life itself demands passion.
He who is indifferent to God has already forfeited his soul.
He who is indifferent to politics has already forfeited his liberty.
In America, religion is not mere window dressing and citizenship is not a spectator sport.
Do not allow our common destiny as a whole people to just happen without your input.
Seek the Truth; find the Way; live the Life; please God, and live forever.

The Miss-Placed Mercy Pages.
Describing the process by which formerly Christian American Culture degenerated into the corrupt, decadent and perverted mess we see today, in art, entertainment, literature, science, journalism, politics and general social behavior. Evil now dominates. Mercy is best applied to those best disposed to receive it. Note well that Biblical Mercy was not applied to the ancient Canaanites.
Does the Year Of Mercy mean the end of Moral and Spiritual Discernment? Fr. Larry Richards says the one thing you are absolutely forbidden to ever apply to anyone else is Judgment. Is that true? And is Mercy absolutely Limitless?
On The Evil One's Mal-Formed Compassion and Malignant Mercy. In malignant mercy we see that evil and untruth can infiltrate and commandeer even the virtues.
On the developing Catholic theological "Mercy War". Has Blessed Cardinal Newman's "Development of Christian Doctrine" been weaponized in the new Mercy War?
Is our Mercy to be unlimited? Should Mercy be applied even to Satan himself? Mercy for your brother, your neighbor, your political enemy; the common criminal. But what about Mercy for the murderous, rapacious horde outside the city walls?
On the Year of Mercy, Obstinate Unrepentant Sinners, and Pure Evil. In this Year of Mercy, are we to be merciful even to the evil barbarian hoard laying siege outside the city walls?
"We belong to the Church militant; and She is militant because on earth the powers of darkness are ever restless to encompass Her destruction. Not only in the far-off centuries of the early Church, but down through the ages and in this our day, the enemies of God and Christian civilization make bold to attack the Creator’s supreme dominion and sacrosanct human rights.”--Pope Pius XII
"It is not lawful to take the things of others to give to the poor. It is a sin worthy of punishment, not an act deserving a reward, to give away what belongs to others."--St. Francis of Assisi
