I am so tired of the incidents of one Protestant brother after another claiming with seemingly ontological certitude that the Catholic Church added seven books into the Bible and that the Protestant "King James" version is somehow a more accurate revision back to the original. It never ends. I get finished arguing with one of them, and another one pops up.
I'm beginning to think that these Protestant "experts" are almost as semi-literate and incapable of doing proper research as are white women with advanced university degrees.
I'm speaking in overall large group characteristics here, recognizing that there are always exceptions; but as general a rule, Protestants are wrong about just about everything theological, and highly educated white women are wrong about just about everything, period.
The Septuagint was the world's first one-book Old Testament Bible, written by Hellenistic (Greek speaking) Jews in Alexandria Egypt during the reign of Ptolemhy II Philadelphus, between the years 285 and 246 BC. It was called the "Book of the 72" because 72 Jewish translators wrote it in the Greek language, six Hebrew scholars from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. There are multiple questionable legends about it, including that it was completed in 72 days, and that individual scholars were locked up separately from each other to do their interpreting, and, miraculously, they all came up with exactly the same translations.
Whatever the true story was, it is a fact that the Greek language Septuagint was produced in the 3rd century BC, and it contained 46 books, not the 39 claimed by all of Protestantism today. And the Catholic Church had nothing to do with that, because the Catholic Church didn't exist yet. It was the product of 3rd century BC, meaning Before Christ.

On going back to the Original Bible, after all these Revisions. The Douay-Rheims is the English translation of the original Vulgate, the world's first one-book Bible, put together by St. Jerome around 400 A.D. From now on, this is my Bible of reference.
Bible Christians: More Biblical than Catholics? No. Not by a long shot. Bible Christians all think their "church" is Bible-based; but the Bible is Catholic-based. The Word produced the Church, and then the Church produced the Bible.
Is the Bible the sole authority for teaching Christianity? If Holy Scripture is the sole authority for Christian teaching, then, where does it say that in Holy Scripture?
And language scholars agree that the New Testament quotes of Old Testament verses, including quotes of Jesus Himself, were literal quotes from the Septuagint, and not from the original Hebrew texts, meaning that the places where the Lord and His apostles quoted any of the old testament verses they were quoting from that same 46 book Septuagint. That was what the Jewish world of that time used and that's why it was quoted.
Saint Jerome, working in the Bethlehem cave where Christ was born, translated the Greek language Septuagint and the Koine Greek language new testament books into Latin, producing the world's first One Book Bible. He completed his work at the turn of the second to third century, completing his work between 400 and 405 AD, or Anum Domini, meaning The Year Of Our Lord.
His work, called the Vulgate Bible, is the only Bible ever approved by the Catholic Church. The world's only direct literal translation of that Bible into English is the Douay Rheims Bible. The Douay Rheims is now the only Bible I reference, after many years of referencing the RSV. The older I get the more I realize that there is nothing new under the sun, and whatever is old is probably more reliable than whatever is new.
The claim that the Church falsified the Jewish canon is false
The "Council of Jamnia" around 90 AD is held to be where the Jewish canon of the Hebrew Bible was settled. Note that it was not a Christian council, but a Jewish council, in an historical period in which non-Christian Jews were still hostile to Christians. It was held after the 70 AD destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It was supposed to have cut out all Greek language books and returning Holy Scripture language back to original Hebrew. This cut out whole books, among them,
- Tobit
- Judith
- Wisdom (Wisdom of Solomon)
- Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)
- Baruch
- 1 Maccabees
- 2 Maccabees
- Sections of Esther
- Sections of Daniel
Note well the fact that all of these books and verses were in the Greek language Septuagint of the Jews, long before Christ was born and long before He gave birth to His Church.
Fr. Martin Luther falsified the Jewish canon by using the "Jamnia" canon instead of the Christian canon. And then falsely claiming that the Church he was revolting against had just made them up out of thin air and added them in.
Protestant false claims of Catholic "Idol Worship"
Another Protestant argument that comes up over and over again is the iconography versus iconoclast argument, which was historically settled again long before Luther's revolt and the birth of all of the tens of thousands of Protestant denominations.
If you look at the Ten Commandments you see that the Catholic counting combines the Protestant 2nd and 3rd into number 2, and the Protestants combine the Catholic 9th and 10th into number 10.
Does that mean that the Church dropped the second Commandment of God? Protestants, almost universally, say yes. And yet the second Commandment insists that no one has seen God, therefore no one can produce an image of God. Until Jesus Christ, the Lord thy God, was made incarnate, no one had seen Him; but after, He was seen by everyone within sight of Him. And almost immediately Iconography was born. St. John himself is credited with making an icon of Jesus Christ on the Isle of Patmos.
The Second Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 787 AD, which was just a tad bit earlier than the birth of Protestantism, settled the argument by deciding against the iconoclasts (image smashers) and that holy icons could be venerated (not worshipped) and that the veneration would pass on the the holy person represented by the image.
Here is what the Council said about the iconoclastic heresy:
- If anyone does not confess that Christ our God can be represented in his humanity, let him be anathema.
- If anyone does not accept representation in art of evangelical scenes, let him be anathema.
- If anyone does not salute such representations as standing for the Lord and his saints, let him be anathema.
- If anyone rejects any written or unwritten tradition of the church, let him be anathema.
Who, the Protestant might ask, can modify the Commandments?
God, is the answer. Jesus, God, made Himself visible to man, and He Who gave us the Commandments can alter them. After all, He altered the Sabbath by changing it from Saturday to Sunday.
Read your Bible. Violating the Saturday Sabbath was his most frequent act that set the Pharisees and the Sanhedrin against Him, and why He was eventually Crucified by them.
Sunday, the day of the Resurrection, became the new Sabbath.
- "...on the first day of the week when we were assembled to break bread..." [Acts 20:7]
That's the Holy Mass; that's not Saturday, it is Sunday.
