A recent discussion in Al Kresta's regular radio broadcast on Catholic Radio got me thinking about this. He was talking about religious denominations, but I began to see our Political Parties as "denominations" of Constitutional interpretation.
In common usage, Denominationalism refers to adherence to the principles of a particular Christian denomination, perhaps to the point of sectarian exclusivity. It denotes the ecclesial and doctrinal territorial lines between Denominations. While there is one and only one original Revelation of Christian truths, each Denomination holds some unique interpretation of that original Revelation that differs from all others, and thus defines the particular Denomination.
Note, first of all, that the Catholic Church is not a Denomination; it is a complete religion. It is, in fact, "Christianity"; the very original religion that all other "Christian" confessions are denominations of. Catholicism is what the Protestant Reformation broke away from, beginning the process of Christian Denominationalism.
The problem with all the Denominations is the lack of any absolute teaching authority to keep the teaching pure; hence, the continuing and ongoing process of Denominationalism. Estimates now range around 40,000 denominations, and growing every day. Having denied the authority of the Pope and the Church hierarchy, each denomination becomes an authority unto itself, until someone inside questions some teaching, and then the denomination either changes it, or splits over it, and another denomination is born.
Non-denominational denominations are denominations that renounce Denominationalism. But their unique teaching of the faith makes them a denomination, too.
"Evangelicals and Catholics Together" was a document aimed at presenting a united ecumenical front against the forces of secularism in society. So it became a sort of "spiritual" ecumenism that avoided, for the most part, doctrine and theology. Only the points that could be agreed upon without argument - the Trinity, the Nicene Creed, and "general" New Testament theology - without getting into areas of contention, which leaves out most serious theology and doctrine contained in the original revelation.
But the problem was that the Evangelicals themselves were made up of many, many denominations. From Baptists to Lutherans, and everything in between. Evangelicalism was already a cross-denominational "Movement" of its own. That posed a problem for any serious ecumenism, because the Evangelicals could not even speak with one voice, that would properly and completely represent all the various denominations that made up Evangelicalism.
Within themselves, the Evangelicals could not speak with one voice, and had to watch their words ever so carefully to keep from alienating denominations within Evangelicalism, let alone alienating the Catholics.
The last attempt at Lutheran-Catholic ecumenism was brought up to highlight the inherent difficulties involved with the continuing and ongoing denominational splitting. The Lutheran-Catholic "Declaration on the Way" was signed and celebrated as a step forward for ecumenism, but it had problems. It contained some 32 "Statements of Agreement" on which Lutherans and Catholics could agree.
But here's the thing: Luther's original Protestant religion is no longer a single denomination, but many. All differ in some way. And the Missouri Synod would not sign the document.
So you see the difficulty. If Lutheranism speaks with multiple voices, what happens when you try to get Evangelicalism all on the same page, with multiple denominations, each of which might have multiple Synods, sub-confessions or sub-denominations?
Only the Catholic Church can speak authoritatively on faith and morals with one voice, speaking from one continually protected Revelation of unchanged faith and morals.
Is a Political Party a "denomination"?
I submit that Political Parties do the same thing Denominations do, but
in the purely Political realm. "Political Party-ism" refers to the exact opposite of strict
adherence to the guiding national political principles of a particular national
Constitution. Political Parties represent varying interpretations of the Constitution, even including rejection of the Constitution, in whole or in part.
The American Constitution's very purpose for being is firmly established in its "Preamble" as follows:
It is with this core constitutional purpose in mind that foreign and domestic policy is established and civil law is legislated, executed and adjudicated. To perfect our union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general well-being, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our offspring. Whatever else government does, it must always do these things first, for they form the Constitution's very purpose for being, and it is solely the Constitution that "constitutes" and brings into being the nation itself.
Where Christianity stands or falls on adherence to the unchanged Revealed Truth, the American Constitutional Republic stands or falls on adherence to the unchanged Constitution. The Constitution is America's "Rock". Politically speaking.
Political Parties either adhere to the original and unchanged (except for Amendments) Constitution, or they do not. The only way to change the Constitution is through the amendment process, in which the whole nation must agree in its majority or the amendment fails. Thus, there is one and only one Constitution, as amended, and not many.
In the Political Parties page, we referred to the advice of George Washington regarding allowing Political Parties to come into existence, as follows:
And that is what has come to be. It is Party Politics, not the Constitution, that grants the Court supreme authority over legal interpretation of the Constitution itself. According to the Constitution, the Court is one of three co-equal branches with no more and no less interpretive authority than the other two branches.
It is Party Politics, not the Constitution, that protects Presidents, Senators, Congressmen and Supreme Court Justices from impeachment from office for violations of the Constitution and their very oaths of office.
And now we see direct violations of the Constitution go by uncontested almost daily, committed by sitting members of all three co-equal branches of our government. All of whom are sworn in their very oaths of office to uphold the Constitution.
Party champions look around and point to Political Parties in every single "civilized" nation, and insist that they are "normal" and expected, and America should be no different. But, they are them, and we are us.
No one on earth has a Constitution like ours.
They are all ruled by governments; we are not.
Every nation other than America is ruled by some form of government. Most of those governments are themselves ruled by Political Parties. The government makes the law or actually is the law.
Not so here. At least, not according to our Constitutional Principles.
The Constitution makes the government. The government is subservient to the Constitution. The Constitution itself, not the current government, is the sovereign ruler, and the government is subject to it, as are the people. The government and the people stand as equals before the sovereign Constitution.
The government is temporary; the Constitution is permanent.
The whole purpose of the Pope and the Bishops who form the government of the Church is to protect, through the charism of Infallibility, the unchanged Revealed Truth, and properly teach it to the world.
Similarly, the purpose of the temporary elected government of America is to protect the unchanged Constitution and adhere to it in the legislation, execution and adjudication of law, and in forming and executing all domestic and foreign policy.
Some modern nations have as many as thirty Political Parties, and never, ever get a government elected by a majority of the actual population. Every sitting government represents a minority, every time. The Parties run the governments, and even overrun or ignore constitutions.
And now that is happening here, too. With this election, the people, or many of us, are waking to the fact that the Parties are absolutely corrupt. Nether of them consider themselves subject to the Constitution. They have made the sitting government the sovereign ruler, over the top of the Constitution.
And that makes the people subject to the government, and to the Parties. Not the constitution.
The Constitution may as well not exist.
But nobody sees it for what it is. Seeing the corruption of the two main Parties, the popular strategy to fix it seems to be to go to another Party, such as the Libertarian Party, or to invent another Party with which to displace the current powers-that-be.
But the Parties are the problem!
The Parties represent Political Denominationalism, no different than Christian Denominationalism, involving splitting, and splintering, until the core beliefs and very purpose for being are changed or so watered down as to not even exist.
Diversity is not good; it is bad. Diversity destroys unity.
There can be no true Church in the absence of fixed revealed Truth.
There can be no Constitutional nation in the absence of a Constitution.
Anyway, them's my thoughts, stirred by a radio broadcast I heard.
Addendum Thursday, October 13, 2016:
As repeated among the Political Parties Pages and elsewhere herein, the Constitution itself nowhere mentions any Political Parties. Therefore, Political Parties in and of themselves are unconstitutional entities in regards to anything related to the governing of the USA. How many among us today even recognize that quite simple matter of fact?
The "Party Delegate" system places unconstitutional Party delegates between the American voters and the Constitutional Electoral College. The Party Primary process has seized unconstitutional exclusive control of who may be nominated for high office. State and lower governments, and citizens, should be placing candidates into contention, as was done before Parties existed.
Winners and new holders of high office swear their fielty to the Constitution, as if it were a living being, in their very oaths of office. And that was the intention of the Framers and the Ratifiers of the Constitution. But Party members owe their fidelity first to their Party, not to the Constitution. And the Party itself, remember, is an unconstitutional entity.
Party influence has no legitimate business establishing rules of operation of either house of Congress, or in selecting committee members or chairmen of committees. Members of Congress should be operating solely under the Constitution, with nothing between them and the Constitution.
The Protestant dogmas of Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, etc., are not to be found anywhere in the original Revealed Truth, protected in the Sacred Deposit of Faith. These dognmas sprang out of Christian Denominationalism.
In a similar manner, such American legalities as Socialized Medicine, Homosexual Marriage, etc., are not to be found anywhere in the Constitution or its amendments. These "legalities" sprang out of Political Party Denominationalism.
America will never again restore her original Constitutionality until and unless she permanently abolishes her Political Party system.
