Every year, we look forward to tax time with increasing dread. Historically, it has meant, for me, at least one more trip to the confessional every stinking year; I just can’t help it. The air fairly turns blue around here when I go through the complex, disgusting, counter-intuitive and even contradictory instructions on the huge, behemoth, mammoth annual tax instructions on how to do your $%*#@!!! taxes!!!
Balderdash! Bull Feathers! Horse Hockey Dooty-Poop!
There is no reason for us to have to put up with this absolute crap. The whole tax code is just plain ridiculous. Who the hell is driving the bus here? Are we the sovereign citizens of America, and do we have representative government, or not? How on earth did we ever come to the place where we have a tax code thousands of pages long? Why?
Now, I have to admit that Turbo-Tax has steadily gotten more sophisticated, and for the last couple of years it has enabled me to get through our annual taxes without the need for any additional trip to the confessional. In fact, last year it all went pretty quickly, to our pleasant surprise. However, why in the world should we, who are not exactly dummies, feel the need to spend a sizeable sum every year for the new version of Turbo-Tax to do something that ought to either be simple to do, or not need to be done at all? Today a majority of American tax payers pay something extra, either for a Turbo-Tax like product, or for a service like H&R Block or perhaps a tax lawyer or accountant, just to get their stupid taxes properly filed.
This is preposterous.
We have already addressed Pork Barrel Earmarks in a previous Argument which described some of the hidden motives of politicians who seek to complexify legislation for both political and personal profit. I submit that much if not most of that earmark complexity involves taxes. In fact, every time anything is added to the cost of any Bill that added cost will affect taxes, because taxes are the only legitimate source of government revenue.
I have elsewhere in this Website recommended a flat national sales tax to replace all other forms of taxation, which I believe would not only out perform any flat tax of income, but would also eliminate the need to file an annual income tax at all. Yes!
Think about it. Why do we have to file at all? What business is it of the government how much money you make? What business is it of the government how much money your Pastor makes? What business is it of the government how much money you have? The beauty of a sales tax collected at the retail level, at the cash register, is that, not only do we gain back some semblance of autonomy and independence from the government, but nobody could avoid the tax. You and I would pay it; illegal aliens would pay it; priests, ministers and rabbis would pay it; criminals would pay it; even government officials would pay it. Anyone who made any kind of a retail purchase would pay it.
It’s time for the government to go back to being our government. The people need to take back a whole lot of the power that has migrated up to the federal government, and the Fair Tax presents an opportunity for us to do that. We talked about this before in the Border Security and Sane Taxes article, among other places. Since then, I’ve seen the Fair Tax, and looked into it.
You can see it at the http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer link. You should visit it, and look at the details; it’s a very comprehensive proposition worthy of serious consideration.
The only part I didn’t like, at first, was the so-called Pre-Bate; but after closer examination, I have to admit there is more going for it than against it. My only objection was that, to get the so-called pre-bate, you have to (shudder!) file, which means that some skeletal remains of the IRS will still be around, with petty bureaucrats struggling to grow their little domains. But, it is fair, is the bottom line. Poor people who have no income to tax would get some monthly income, to offset the higher sales taxes on food and other stuff. (And so would every one else.) Go to the site and read about it; I won’t push the details here. Learn about it and make up your own mind. This is vitally important to you and yours.
The Fair Tax proposal includes a repeal of the 16th Amendment, which is the income tax amendment. What this means is that taxing income would go back to being illegal, because it would be unconstitutional. I believe it should go further, and prohibit any other form of tax that might exist or that might be created. This would mean, in other words, by law, sales tax only; all other forms of taxation other than retail, point-of-sale sales tax to be against the law, in perpetuity. No doubt this would drive the Marxists nuts. (I mean Democrats.)
Consider just the simplification aspect of it. To simplify is to remove layers and layers of complexity and, I believe, purposeful obfuscation and smoke, intended to hide pork, corruption and political shenanigans from our eyes. This presents an opportunity to eliminate the gigantic tax code overnight, and very nearly shut down the IRS, or at least something like ninety percent of it. Anything that reduces government and reduces cost of government and reduces reach and power of government is a good thing for everyone; except, of course, for the most corrupt.
At the National level, implementation of the Fair Tax in America would trigger a major competition for major international corporations to migrate into America, because there would be no corporate taxes. More corporations would mean more jobs. America would overnight become the place to locate corporate headquarters, manufacturing facilities and businesses of all variety, and America would experience an economic boom the like of which the world has never seen.
The biggest single aspect of this monumental economic boom would be attributable to the fact that every American worker would immediately get a huge raise in pay; what he used to pay in federal income tax would now be added to his net pay. Every existing business in America would immediately get a huge reduction in expenses, because they would immediately stop paying all corporate taxes. Can you say Boom?
At the State level, the first state to implement a state Fair Tax and eliminate all other forms of state taxation would trigger an instant competition among surrounding states to implement one with a lower Fair Tax sales tax. Businesses (meaning jobs) and new residents would immediately be attracted to the state that had the fair tax for the added tax benefit of location, location, location. If a state eliminated every other form of taxes, including property taxes, there would be a migration of citizens into the state, and that state would experience an economic boom even bigger than surrounding states. A wonderful competition between states might ensue, to the benefit of everyone.
At the Local level, the first city/county/local taxing authority to go to the Fair Tax for local taxes and eliminate all other forms of local taxation, including property taxes, would trigger the same kind of positive migration of both businesses and citizens and the same kind of economic advantage over surrounding localities, triggering even more competition among localities. The first full Fair Tax community would draw new businesses and new residents like nectar draws bees.
Overall, what we are talking about here is a workable tax system that I believe would trigger an economic boom that would make even the great Reagan boom look like small potatoes. It would go on, indefinitely, and it would grow. This one, single thing could retrieve America from the precipice of economic doom and the specter of flat out Socialism, which is to say, Dictatorship. See the The Communist Lie argument, if you haven’t yet seen it, to see what I’m talking about here.
You owe it to your country and you owe it to your family to look into this, and take action on it.
Go to the http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer link, and go over it in detail. There are now a couple of books on it in the Reference Material link, which appears at the bottom of every page on this site. I’m telling you, you need to get into this and get behind it.
Pray for discernment; study the Fair Tax objectively; spread the word; contact your Representatives. Speak up.
Please God, and live forever.

It seems to me that you are still promoting the rampant consumerism and materialistic tendencies of unfettered capitalism, which are not all that good. Perhaps more socialist countries don’t have as much material wealth by comparison, but at least what they have is more guaranteed and stable.

I’m sure you will agree that Cuba is a “more socialist” country than the USA. The fixed pay of the Cuban worker today is $20 per month, subject to change at any moment by stroke of the dictator’s pen. And, that $20 per month pay is also subject to the worker’s continuing ability to meet his work quota.
The fair-tax Prebate alone beats that by a very wide mark. You can see the details at the Fair Tax Prebate (PDF) link. Prebate is computed annually based on the published “poverty level” figures, to make sure that the legitimate American citizenry can still afford the basic necessities of life. It is the Fair Tax Rate, expressed as a percentage, times the poverty rate, divided by 12. Each citizen receives this amount in the mail or in his bank account each month.
If it were in effect this year, 2009, a single person would receive a monthly check of $199, and a couple would receive a check of $399. It goes up with dependents, of course. A single parent with seven children would get $682 per month, and a couple with seven children would get $882 per month. All Americans would receive this Prebate, without so much as lifting a finger. No work quotas, no work requirements, no pre-qualification, other than being an American citizen or a legal American worker.
Compare that to Cuba, and compare the “stability” of any nation on earth to that of the USA, up until Obama took office.
Perhaps more importantly, under the Fair Tax, Social Security would no longer be unfunded, and neither would Medicare or Medicaid.Regarding the comparison of the “rampant consumerism and materialistic tendencies of unfettered capitalism”, while I agree that it is not all good, I still prefer it to the fetters of Socialism. Virtue versus vice are better handled at the individual level between a man and his religion in the strictly private sphere, than at the federal government level, particularly when the belief system of the rulers appears to be something between paganism and materialist-atheism, and includes the “value” that says that HBAACOTE11 .

If we still need to fund all government spending at current levels, wouldn’t the required level of sales tax be so great as to make most items unaffordable?

No; you need to go to the link to see the details of this, but essentially, the researchers have computed precisely what the tax level must be. No company, no industry, no farmer, no grocer, no small business man, no service-provider of any kind ignores his tax burden or other business expenses when he sets the retail price for his service or product. Taxes – all taxes – are figured into retail prices already. Fair Tax will remove this business expense from businesses and from prices.
Once Fair Tax is activated, prices of everything should be ready, willing and able to go radically down, and free market competition will fiercely drive them down. Those who don’t lower their prices will lose market share, at least, or go out of business, at worst. The amount of sales tax imposed on retail products and services has been computed to hit at or around the amount American business has already included into American retail prices.
Another way of saying the same thing is that every product or service available on the free market should be about as affordable after fair tax implementation as it is now under our existing complex, hodge-podge tax system.
The whole purpose for being of the carefully researched and computed so-called pre-bate payment to American filers is to ensure that the necessities of life are available to all Americans. The amount is computed as some minimal average sums of shelter, energy, food, medicine and so forth, to be made available to all, on a continuous basis.
As I said, my hope and prayer is that states will adopt it too, and that cities and other local taxing authorities will adopt it at the local level, so that all other forms of taxation, including property tax, will disappear forever. I look forward to open competition between states and cities that go to Fair Tax to draw citizens and businesses from other areas of the country and the world. Tax legislation, from that point on, at all levels, would involve increasing or decreasing retail sales tax, and increasing or decreasing pre-bates. Very simple.
There is nothing else out there that comes close to the potential of the Fair Tax being a radical American revolution back to basics, radically reducing government, radically reducing government power, radically increasing the liberty of American citizens and potentially saving America (and the world) from economic depression.
Why should the Marxists be the only ones with a radical agenda? This is, after all, not that radical. Fair Tax in and of itself could break the back of the anti-American movement, and promote a return to a pro-American sentiment throughout the land.
Fair Tax is a reasonable, practical, possible and, I believe, necessary path back to common sense Americanism. I pray that a strong majority of Americans will get behind it and push it hard.

This is never going to happen. I can’t believe you take this seriously. This is just pie-in-the-sky daydreaming, because it is never going anywhere. Nobody, including Congress, has ever even heard of it. You are wasting your breath.

I beg to differ. This is a serious bill, now before Congress, identified as HR 25 S 296 and it is gaining support. And it is “going nowhere” only so long as the Marxocrats control the White House, the House and the Senate, which, we may pray, may not be for long. If Obama doesn’t act very, very soon in the violent manner typical of Marxist dictators, then he will loose his chance and he will fail to take over America completely.
Once pro-Americans are back driving the bus, this bill has every possibility of passing and being signed into law. In the mean time, my wish and prayer is that it will start moving at the grass-roots level in the local communities. If cities and other local tax-authority jurisdictions pass local versions of the same thing, it would put extreme pressure on surrounding local jurisdictions to do the same thing. Open competition is a wonderful thing.
If many local jurisdictions passed local versions of it, it would put pressure on the state to do the same thing. One or more states doing it would put huge pressure on the federal government to follow suite.
This is truly a revolutionary idea, and the best revolutions begin with the people, not with the government. This is, indeed, change we can believe in.

OK look... let's stop all this Flat Tax, Fair Tax , PRE-BATE, REBATE, REFUNDS, 9-9-9, 6-6-6 CRAP and focus on the exact system of taxation we need in this country for what the CONSTITUTION (anyone remember that document?)mandates is the role of the Federal government.
FIRST of all, there are FOUR purposes of the Feds, and that is IT, everything else is UNCONSTITUTIONAL! They are:
1) Provide for the common defense of the collective states in defense;
2) Act as the collective representative of the States in foreign affairs, trade and treaties;
3) Act as arbiter in disputes amongst the States and disputes amongst the States and the people;
4) Provide for the common security of our borders...
and that is IT. No Department of Education (Education and health is a STATE'S responsibility!), Land Management, Interior, IRS... half of the President's Cabinet is unconstitutional.
Now let's get down to how we PAY for that... Currently, 53% of the people pay ALL FEDERAL TAXES, with the top 25% of the population paying nearly 85% of all taxes. This has to STOP! How do we do that? Easy... Forget the 9-9-9, Flat/Fair Tax...
And these should be accomplished simultaneously in order...
1)Repeal the 16th Amendment,
2)Establish a Balanced Budget Amendment, 3)Abolish the IRS,
4)Implement a National Sales tax under the following provisions...
Additionally, this will require the federal government to act within the fiscal availabilities they have and drastically CUT federal revenue requirements. No more PORK or Ear-marks and now more BS Solenydra "loans". Return education to the States and well as healthcare, and if people don't like it in their State, let'em move. But this is just a FOUNDATION. Once it’s in Congress, it will come out looking completely different but 1, 2, and 3 cannot be ignored and MUST be in a First-phase of ANY reform!

I’m sure you put a lot of thought into this, but I believe the Fair Tax plan has just a smidgeon more backing it up. One more little factoid to add to your list is that the top 1 percent of tax payers currently pays upwards of 40% of all of America’s taxes.
There’s just nothing out there that would work as well or is as well thought out and well researched as the Fair Tax. Herman Cain has indicated that his 9-9-9 plan is a “stop-gap” or a stepping-stone to the fair tax, to get something done now until the Constitution can be properly amended.
However, it is entirely possible to legislatively set the income and corporate tax rates to zero, with a sunset clause, within the same bill that would implement the Fair Tax, as I said in the Fasttrack Fairtax page. Congress can, and all too frequently has, changed the income tax rate; there is nothing to stop Congress from changing all income tax rates to zero. Congress could legislatively outlaw every other form of tax in existence except for the income tax (set to zero) and the Fair Tax, at the federal level. Then there might be ample time to work on a Constitutional Amendment, with the Fair Tax fully operational.
