It is hard to accept the fact that a significant portion of the highly educated among the world population, perhaps even a majority, do not hold a correct understanding of simple economics. But here we are. Today, the very term Capitalism itself is most often used as a pejorative, and most people have been educated into viewing it as a "system of greed" rather than as what it actually is.
What prompted this webpage was a plethora of "Please do not publish this" comments from well educated people, clerics among them, in response to the Evangelizing for Communism webpage, in which I criticized Pope Francis' attack on Capitalism and promotion of Socialist redistribution. While most of them agreed with my position, with some exceptions to certain points, none of them - not one - wanted to be "on public record" as critical of the Pope. In fact, they strongly criticized my doing so in public.
(Note that Pope Francis didn't even use the term Unfettered Capitalism in his exhortation, but that just about everyone who commented on it, whether pro or con, did use it.)
The exact same sort of phenomenon occurred after publication of the Pope on Globalism page, in which I was similarly critical of Pope Benedict XVI for his promotion of the idea of a new global government to replace national sovereignty of all nations. Lots of comments, not for publication. They disagreed, not with what I said, but with the fact that I said it out loud. ??? So, we are not even to speak about it in public? Excuse me?
I saw Benedict's words as little more than a recommendation to turn the whole world over to a new WBESSWG17 to properly "take care of us" and be nice. This was, ostensibly, Benedict's solution to the growing world economic crisis.
However, as we showed in the Economic Catastrophe Pages, the growing (and continuing) economic crisis was brought about and caused by government action, not by any free market activity. It was the opposite of Capitalism; it was government interference with the free market that caused the problems, and going to bigger government with more power was not only not the solution, but the sure path to absolute total economic catastrophe. Not to mention the end of liberty.
We will talk about the radical differences between Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum, Benedict XVI's Caritas Veritate and Francis' Evangelii Gaudium in a future webpage, to be titled Social Justice. Here we will only note that Leo XIII's encyclical very strongly condemned the notion of "community property" in favor of the natural law and private property, quoting Deut. 5:21, ""Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife; nor his house, nor his field, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is his."
What are the limits of Papal authority when addressing political, socioeconomic and civil government architectures? I am not sure; this whole area is fuzzy in my mind, and perhaps someone out there can make the picture more clear. We described, in the Judeo-Christian Ethos page, how the first Commandments of God address man's relationship with God, or our faith. And how the following Commandments of God address man's relationship with his fellow man, or our morality. These are the two areas in which Popes and Councils in communion with Popes can speak with absolute authority, under guidance of the Holy Ghost, as we said in the Infallibility page. That does not mean that they always speak with absolute authority in these areas.
But Smith published Wealth of Nations in 1776, and Marx published Communist Manifesto in 1848, both long after the closing of the sacred deposit of faith, upon which Popes and Councils speak infallibly. If it's not in the deposit of faith, it is not something that can be declared as a new doctrine. That's my understanding.
The Scotsman Adam Smith described the free market in his Wealth of Nations, he didn't invent it. It was a natural thing, that came into being by individual men trying to improve their own condition in life. The more they struggled to do that, and the more they were allowed, i.e., not constrained in any way from doing it, they more pennies they could save, which is another way of saying the more wealthy they could become. He showed that it was an accumulation of natural individual citizen actions that ultimately created the wealth of whole nations. Newly created wealth trickles down, one way or another.
Marx was probably the first to use the word Capitalism in his condemnation of the free market in his Das Kapital. What most modern day philosophical Communists do not know is that the whole of his Communist ideology was a purposeful fraud. Under the influence of the deceit and treachery in the writings of Machiavelli, and the cold methodology in the writings of Hegel, he painted a beautiful picture of a path to man-made human perfection to draw in disciples. But the true aim, from the beginning, was, purely, the assumption of political power. We tried to highlight this in Refuting Marx, and in all the other pages among The Marxism Pages.
The true goal of Marxism was and is the assumption of pure dictatorial power, whether by direct Machiavellian treacherous "revolution" by deceived, sacrificial agent provocateurs, or through Hegelian "progressive" steps. All to be done in deceit, under the deceptive mask of the achievement of perfect human equality and an end to poverty and hunger; who would be against that?
No other polemic or manifesto ever deceived so many people over so many decades into becoming willing accomplices in their own slavery. Even after being openly called Useful Idiots by famous dictators such as Lenin and Stalin, new Useful Idiots continue to be recruited to the Marxist cause to this very day.
So what is Unfettered Capitalism? If Capitalism is definitively unfettered, then, there is no such thing as unfettered Capitalism, because if you fetter it, it is no longer Capitalism. Of course, that's my definition, which may disagree with yours. Normally, when you hear terms like unfettered Capitalism, unrestrained commerce, the "dictatorship" of the free market, etc., you are likely listening to someone who has been soaked, stewed and steeped in Marxist theory. In America, this Marxist anti-Capitalism sentiment is interwoven into virtually all formal education.
Unrestrained consumerism at the individual level, is, of course, harmful, as is almost anything over-indulged in. Over-indulgence in just about anything harmful begins with over-indulgence in consumerism. But, as in all things, that is a matter of the moral struggle between vice and virtue. Our religion teaches us to moderate our appetites; however, note well that Marxism attacks also our religion. In America, this Marxist anti-religion sentiment is interwoven into virtually all formal education.
The fall-back position of the unfortunate citizen who encounters hardship is the charity of the family, the charity of the Church and the charity of like-minded neighbors. Again, note well the fact that Marxism attacks also the family, and that this anti-family sentiment is interwoven into virtually all formal education.
There is nothing left out of the Marxist demonizing of things. Inheritance. Private property. All in favor of the eventual great collective, in which everyone on earth is equal and holds all property in common, and there is no government.
The impracticality of the whole thing approaches the level of the imbecilic. It takes my breath away, to consider that any adult capable of critical thinking could ever believe that anything like a global collective of equal people holding everything in common in the absence of any governing authority is even remotely possible.
First, how do you gather everything? Then, how do you distribute everything? Then, how do you keep doing it?
Well, you don't. It is quite impossible.
What can I say?
Every bit of Marxist ideology is blithering idiocy.
And there ain't no such thing as Unfettered Capitalism.

"There is no such thing as unfettered Capitalism, because if you fetter it, it is no longer Capitalism." This makes no sense to me. So because cigarette companies are fettered with restrictions that prohibit advertising on TV or selling to minors, they're not free to make money? Because automobile companies are fettered with emission standards, they're not free to make money?

Your Marxism is showing, in that you are confusing the argument between Capitalism and Communism with the desire to perfect Creation through forcible government action. Which is another argument altogether, between Freedom and Communism.
I know, Marxism can be confusing, and Capitalism is generally too simple for Marxism's convinced Useful Idiots to grasp, steeped as they are in elitist and supposedly intellectual Marxist complexities. In answer to your questions, cigarette companies and car companies could still produce profit, but not as much, and perhaps not enough depending on payroll and other business expenses.
Capitalism is all tied up in four natural law rights of man: Equality, Life, Liberty and Property. They are treated separately, in Equality, Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happines. In America, these four natural law rights are all Constitutional Rights of the American citizenry.
The one you need to look at and try to understand is the Pursuit of Happiness, or, Property, because Property = Wealth = Profit, all the very things demonized and hated by Marxists and today's Marxist-infected "Liberals". All the very things that made America a great nation. All the very things suppressed in Socialist lands, making them poor, at the citizen level.
Your Liberal Atheist dream of a one-day perfect world wide collective or cooperative community of happiness is a pipe dream. A deception. Perfection is not of this world, but the next.
Never be lukewarm.
Life itself demands passion.
He who is indifferent to God has already forfeited his soul.
He who is indifferent to politics has already forfeited his liberty.
In America, religion is not mere window dressing and citizenship is not a spectator sport.
Do not allow our common destiny as a whole people to just happen without your input.
Seek the Truth; find the Way; live the Life; please God, and live forever.

"Unfettered Capitalism" does not exist; so why is the term so popular? Unfettered Capitalism is a nonsensical term. The moment it is fettered it is no longer Capitalism.

"We belong to the Church militant; and She is militant because on earth the powers of darkness are ever restless to encompass Her destruction.
